Behavioral Addictions: Conceptual Overview and Treatment Basics

Behavioral Addictions, specifically Gambling Disorder and Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD), are commonly occurring conditions that are often misunderstood and undertreated in the current mental health and substance use treatment landscape. This training will provide a 1.5-hour overview of the definition, prevalence, factors contributing to onset, special population considerations (e.g., women, US veterans, LGBTQ), and recovery course for these behavioral conditions. The latter 2 hours of the course will then provide a targeted discussion of screening and diagnostic considerations, as well as an introduction to therapeutic and pharmacological treatment strategies.
Target Audience
This program is intended for a general audience, inclusive of clinical and non-clinical staff who may interact with individuals with a behavioral addiction concern (e.g., clinicians, outreach, patient service coordinators). It is also intended for a clinical audience (psychologists, social worker, nurse practitioners, MDs).
Learning Objectives
By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Describe gambling disorder and compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) in a clinical context.
- Discuss contributing factors in the etiology of gambling disorder and CSBD.
- Identify several screening and assessment tools for gambling disorder and CSBD.
- Describe several cognitive-behavioral techniques for the treatment of gambling disorder and CSBD.
- Describe strategies to address special population considerations when assessing for and treating gambling disorder and CSBD.
