On-Demand: Spotlight on Advanced Topics in Women’s Mental Health

The purpose of this course is to provide clinically meaningful education to multidisciplinary health care providers on topics often encountered in caring for women with psychiatric disorders.  This course was designed to promote high quality clinical care in women with psychiatric disorders across the reproductive lifespan, with comprehensive coverage of frequently encountered topics and discussion of the evidence base to inform clinical decision making.  Perinatal psychiatry topics will including clinical challenges discussed with case-based learning and considerations for women of color.  Substance use disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum will be additionally addressed. Topics will also include sexual dysfunction and an update on hormone therapy for the menopausal transition. Learning in this course will be facilitated by didactic materials delivered by the faculty from the MGH Center for Women’s Mental Health. Faculty will also provide question and answer and case-based discussion sessions for course participants. Readings to accompany course materials will also be provided.

  • Discuss the management of psychiatric disorders in women in the context of infertility and its treatment
  • Describe FDA pregnancy labeling for psychotropic medications and to put this in historical context, while considering the use of an antidepressant and early pregnancy exposure
  • Discuss selected non-medication strategies as part of the regimen for residual major depressive disorder

Challenging Cases 2:

  • Discuss the prevalence of postpartum psychosis and its risk factors, treatment and prevention strategies
  • Discuss treatment for bipolar disorder across pregnancy and the postpartum and relapse prevention strategies
  • Discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the clinical delivery of perinatal psychiatry services in the US
  • Describe the risks of obesity in pregnancy and implications for women with psychiatric disorders

Considerations for Women of Color:

  • Identify barriers to care for racially and ethnically minoritized women.
  • Discuss factors associated with the development of medical mistrust.
  • Describe the cultural assessment and treatment preferences of racially and ethnically minoritized women.

Sexual Dysfunction in Women

  • Assess the various causes of sexual problems for women
  • Discuss risks and benefits of available treatment options for sexual dysfunction in women
  • Create an individualized treatment plan that addresses the multi-factorial nature of sexual dysfunction

Menopausal Hormone Therapy:

  • Discuss the impact of menopausal symptoms on quality of life
  • Describe how to advise women about available therapies for vasomotor symptoms 
  • Assess the potential risks and benefits of menopausal hormone therapy

Substance Use Disorder During Pregnancy:

  • Describe how the historical approach to substance use in pregnancy continues to harm patients in the U.S.
  • Discuss the optimal management of pregnant people who use opioids
  • Describe the literature on treatment of alcohol use disorder in pregnancy
